HE

Posted by caroldimon on November 27, 2012 at 5:10 AM

Higher education may be becoming stale- but I do not want to generalise. The term dinasaurs (Avis et al 2002)  is used to refer to individuals who have taught the same info using same methods and been in the same job for years. Some establishments dislike new methods and approaches undertaken by questioning staff. Hence it is very difficult for willing new lecturers  to gain access. HE thus becomes an automatic delivery service for knowledge that meets set criteria. Ownership and dictatorship of knowledge is then  the situation. The question is who is the dictator? Is it Governmental with establishments in fear of losing funding? Hence some aspects and the views of some theorists, especially classic ones, are neglected. Yet the aim of HE is to promote thinking amongst students, not  provide knowledge.

Hourly paid lecturers have scope here. They could be practitioners and experts for example. Unis/ colleges could use them more in times of financial upheaval as there are. However, need be part of team- involve in meetings, let them help other lecturers and students. Full time staff should not fear that their own position is being erased.
