Delicacy of being a relative/carer

Posted by caroldimon on January 14, 2014 at 10:45 AM Comments comments (0)

Just been asked by  a relative about prevention of pressure care in a residential home, let's say it was her dad. Made me think. How on earth can a relative ask  a senior carer or nurse, if she can look at the resident's,  or patient's, pressure areas eg bottom?

Next of kin, do have  a right to read the care plan- with the patient's permission- consider however, cases of dementia etc. Need gain approval; power of attorney would help.

Even then, how can a relat...

Cruelty and nursing

Gives historical perspective, so often neglected. Also this is an international problem, not solely UK or NHS.

Connected to atitudes/humanity/politics etc.

Another case in  a private run care home. Government- poor care does not solely occur in the NHS. Nor is it always due to low staffing. Time you accepted your responsibility for the private sector.

Some may realise, problems of "poor care" which are related to attitudes, extend way beyond the hospital or care home or whatever. They reflect attitudes within society, and are politically influenced. In this UK case, we have a British man , terribly abused by a British family, and kept as  a slave (2014). Recall also horrors...

Impact of book " The commodity of care"

Is triggering debate- which is great; agree or disagree. The issues do need further investigation and discussion.

Now stocked by National Libary of Australia (Trove) following recommendations. At least it may trigger international discussion, and consideration of the issues, which is so needed. Students so need the awareness.

Major issues of impact- fake certificates, student nurses unable to obtain jobs as nurses,  complaints in care homes, who owns care homes?

Stop press

Read this journal, or contribute to it. nursesfyi.com

Why? it is independent ie not linked to any organisation, addresses international issues, and offers ordinary nurses/ students/ care staff a voice.

Many journals and puiblishers  mainly publish renowned academics, authors, or organisations. No disrespect, but we need a broader, unrestricted , unaffected perspective.

Nursing Politics in Bed 1

Nursing POLITICS IN bed 1

Nursing “does not exist in a vacuum” (Dimon 2013). The approach of the government to society is dictated by politics at the time. This influences social attitudes and priorities. For example;individuals must earn a living, individuals must earn status. They who do not earn and depend on those who do, are unworthy or “scivers”.Darwin- the fittest species survive by cooperation. This is especially reflected within the workhouse ...

Lenin:Care

A few words from Lenin Nightingale

Poor care will always exist in whatever area or field.

Whilst some have different expecations and therefore, levels of acceptance (Dimon 2013), there may also be  a degree of complacency. What causes this? The case of- we are not as bad as some, no perfect ward or care home exists, nothing can be done, just do job and go home etc. This is what we deal with- few intend to be uncaring. Happens in all occupations. You see, but do n...

Day Trip to Casualty ?10 pounds

Doctors want to charge casualty patients

Sounds a  good idea- charge £10 , patients who unecessarily attend casualty. Yes it is  a tremendous burden on casualty. But how do we define "unecessary"? This cannot be determined, in some cases, until been assessed by  a professional.

Some-yes. They could have gone to their GP.

Some- have no GP.

Some- are sent there by the GP...

Conflict of interest

RCN  Linked to  a management body that aims to restrict hospital budgets, and nurse vacancies.

RCN linked to EU committee that  promotes freedom of migration of labour and strikes.

These links may appear to conflict with the declared aims of the RCN.

See lenin2u.wordpress

Of course, other major organisations may well be in similar situations of conflicts.
